Taylor's Science Quiz Victory!

It was a long day, starting on a nervous note, with a car ride filled with Gillian's constant call for us to not stress ourselves out. Me, Gillian, Yih Tang, Ramaraj were riding in Puan Teh's car to the Science Quiz, my mind furiously going through my all-important chemistry notes and my heart nearly beating out of my chest. "Reodx, Mn2+, Cl5+, "... all flying through my head, with "Boom Boom Pow" playing away from teacher's radio.

A short while later we were in the Lecture Theater, Gillian was so confident we would win she was studying "Peribahasa Bahasa Malaysia"... in a SCIENCE competition. I had alot of doubt, I never joined such a scientific competition before. A blink of an eye and few few fast flips of the Chem notes and we were in the eerie silence of the Lab where we met it.

1st challenge: 40 Objective Questions, 10 eachfrom Bio,Chem,Phys, AddMaths

*quiet thinking*...
*press,press calculator*

....next question

SMK Seafield was tremendous at the 1st Challenge. We were done in a blitz. I was only worried that we had careless mistakes.

2nd Challenge: Making a fruit cell

2 Lemons, 2 Oranges, 3 Limes, wires, ,pieces of metal, LED, Multimeter
"Build a cell(battery)"-Instructions from judge

The electrodes which would bring us to victory

Hah, we actually new what to do already. This was partly thanks to the dedicated nightly MSN disscussions between us. The moment they let us start we were on it already. The only thing left to do is to hope that no other team has a better design than us.

We got a rather good 8.41 volts from the final design and what-we-thought-was-good ~8 pico amps. But sudddenly our confidence was blasted away by the news that the team with the table behind us got 8.7 volts, a considerable amount more than us. And the time was over, we could do no more.

Results:

We came to win, but now we were having our doubts. We were doubting wheter we should check our answers again. We were doubting our Fruit Cell. But we realised nothing can be done now. All that there is left is the nerve-wracking process of waiting for the results. (Agghh, Gillian you should have stayed back for the prize giving ceromony)

They announced the schools that got perfect score for the respective subjects in Challenge 1. Our school was fantastic! Seafield got a perfect, no mistake score in Chemistry, Biology (kudos to Gillian), Physics(kudos to Ramaraj). At that stage, our only competitor is Chung Hwa with 3 perfect scores as well, bu instead of having a perfect Biology score, they got perfect in Maths. Yih Tang was killing himself over the fact that he couldnt get perfect score for Maths.

Challenge 2 broke our spirits. We didnt get 1st 2nd or 3rd in the experiment. Seems like our FruitCell failed. As a matter of fact, our spirits and confidence plunged to the bottom of the floor, was trampled over, and smashed into oblivion.

When they announced the second runner up and 1st runner up , we realised that they were both 2nd and 3rd in Challenge 2, the Fruit Cell. We lost all hope. Surely, the team with 1st in Challenge 2 was going to be champion.But...

*drumroll*
"The winner is..."
*shit, we wont win..*
"SMK....."
*hmmm, not SJK?*
"SEAFIELD!"
"YESSSS!!!!"

We couldnt believe it! We won! Taylors Science Quiz 2009, Seafield brings home the Trophy! Exhiliration! Euphoria! Me, Yih Tang, Ramaraj, Puan Teh went on stage and we held our head (and prizes) up high with glory....
